One-octave arpeggios are introduced with sol-fa, with improvisation exercises at the end of each chapter. Students discover chords I and IV (and i and iv in minor keys) through singing. Rather than having the arpeggios printed for them, the pages contain scales with empty noteheads, waiting for each student to colour the notes of each arpeggio. The improvisation pages require students to identify chords I and V in simple melodies and improvise harmonies accordingly.
