This set of variations is based on a concept that was used by numerous Baroque composers, including Corelli, Lully and Vivaldi. The origin of ‘La Folia’ is obscure, but during the Baroque period it developed as a chord progression in a minor key, in triple time, and with a basic melody that used a Sarabande rhythm. It was often associated with improvisation, and players are welcome to add improvisations to this arrangement. For this purpose the bass line could be used and extra variations added to the arrangement. A harpsichord or keyboard could also be added.
